1 Down. 12 To GO.

27 Jan

Yesterday I ran my first race of the year. Another half-marathon. I ran it on the treadmill and it went very well. Mom’s Run this Town put together a Virtual Race, “Winter Wonderland.”

A virtual race is nothing like a real race, obviously. However I did appreciate the round of applause I received from my husband when I got upstairs. It’s almost kind of depressing when you “cross the finish line” because there is no one there to cheer you on, congratulate you, or give you a beverage. You just shut off the treadmill and go on with your day. No one notices. Except for the people you live with. Oh well, that’s not the reason I run. So stop being such a dang baby right? 🙂

Feeling pretty good today. My hips are a little crabby and my ankles ache a tad. I think it’s time for some new shoes maybe. They have about 400 miles on them and my right foot has a rip inside. Just about time.

I didn’t follow a specific training plan this month. Since I completed Les Mills in December I’ve been doing my own thing. We’ll see how well I do when I do my end of the month measurements.

January runs (so far):

**Weekdays I do shorter runs**

January 8: 2.24mi.

January 10: 1.89mi.

January 12: 5mi.

January 14: 3.05mi.

January 17: 2.90mi.

January 19: 9mi.

January 21:3.40mi

January 23: 1mi

January 26: 13.1mi

I plan on doing this type of training for the year. I like to do interval training during the week and save my long runs for when I have the time. Not saying this plan will work for you, but it is for me. So far! My next race will be February 23-“Barking Mad for Breast Cancer.”

Have a fantastic day!

What’s your primary workout? Running

How long have you been working out?                                        My entire life: I was a dancer starting at age 2 until about 20 and played many other sports (basketball, softball, volleyball) off and on. After college I started running and was immediately hooked.

How often do you work out? Daily I do something: run 5-6 days, spin class 1-2, weight training 2-3.

What’s your favorite outfit to Sweat Pink in? If it is warm I am in   my Nike Tempo shorts, tank and hat. In colder weather UnderArmour tights and turtle neck with Smart Wool socks (and plenty of other layers!)

What’s your favorite healthy snack and meal? I am a salad fanatic, lately my favorite is spinach topped with a mix of black beans, roasted peppers, sweet potato and salsa. My go to snack is homemade granola either plain or on Almond yogurt.

If you could have one cheat day where nothing counted against you, what would you eat and do? I hate to say it but I would still run, I love it! but follow this with a huge piece of tiramisu and a couple glasses of pinot noir.

What is your biggest motivation to staying fit? The feeling I get after a great workout and always trying to better myself. My daughter is a a huge motivation too, I love showing her how strong women can be and role modeling a healthy lifestyle.

Any advice for the beginners out there? Find something you enjoy and start there, grab some friends or find a group to workout with which increases the social aspect and accountability. Set a goal and reach for it and don’t be afraid to reward yourself. Don’t be too hard on yourself or compare to others; we are all different and need to focus on better our past performances.

What’s your favorite thing about blogging? Running, parenting and cooking (oops that’s 3).

How do you hope to inspire people? Being a mom who still finds time to workout I think this inspires others. I hope I can pass on my love of running to others and showing that no matter where we start we can always achieve more. My first two marathons were 5+ hours and I now consistently run 3:30 and am a competitive runner, something I never thought possible when I began.

What’s your primary workout?
Primarily I am a runner. I run 3 times a week; speedwork or hill work one day, easy run, and then on the weekends a long run at least 10 miles long.

How long have you been working out?
I have been running for almost 7 years.

How often do you work out?
I try and work out 6 days a week. 3 days of running, and 3 days of cross training.

What’s your favorite outfit to Sweat Pink in?
I love wearing my pink sweat pink tank top with some black shorts, and my pink sneakers 🙂

What’s your favorite healthy snack and meal?
My favorite healthy snack is almonds, and my favorite healthy meal is a taco salad with morningstar crumblers for the meat.

If you could have one cheat day where nothing counted against you, what would you eat and do?
That’s a hard one, I love food so there is so much that I would want to eat and I don’t really limit myself as to the things I eat now, I just limit my portions. I guess I would just eat a lot of everything 🙂

What is your biggest motivation to staying fit?
My children. I want to be fit enough to run around with them, and keep up with them.

Any advice for the beginners out there?
Don’t give up. You are going to have days where you don’t get your workout in, or you eat the wrong things. Don’t beat yourself up, just move on and try harder the next day.

What’s your favorite thing about blogging?
I love getting my feelings out, and I hope that what I write helps and inspires others.

How do you hope to inspire people?
I hope that people see through me that it is possible to exercise and stay healthy even though we are busy moms.

What’s your primary workout?

How long have you been working out? Working out since college but distance running for about 1 year.

How often do you work out?
I’d like to say at least 3 times a week, but for the past month or so life has interfered and I have been slacking!

What’s your favorite outfit to Sweat Pink in?
I tend to buy mostly pink and black workout outfits and my absolute favorite running outfit is my #sweatpink race tee, my black Aspaeris compression shorts and my pink camo Spibelt!

What’s your favorite healthy snack and meal?
My husband and I love cucumbers and salsa for a snack – you get the crunch of the cucumber without the fat & salt content of tortilla chips! Plus, cucumbers really fill you up. My favorite healthy meal is probably a mixture of quinoa, veggies, soy chorizo and goat cheese with a little bit of Sriracha – so tasty!

If you could have one cheat day where nothing counted against you, what would you eat and do?
I would want to eat really creamy, decadent mac n cheese and lay around watching movies with my puppy and husband!

What is your biggest motivation to staying fit?
The satisfaction I get when I finish a really intense workout and how great I feel when I am active and healthy.

Any advice for the beginners out there? The hardest part is getting out there! I suggest having a workout buddy who motivates you to workout when you really don’t want to (& realize that there will definitely be days when you don’t want to!). Also, nobody’s perfect so don’t get down on yourself when you hit a roadblock. It happens to everyone.

What’s your favorite thing about blogging?
The support from other people who love what I love! Honestly, I can’t explain how much I love comments and connecting with readers & other bloggers!!

How do you hope to inspire people?
I hope that by being real I can show others that you don’t have to be perfect to make a difference in your life and the lives of others.

Phyllis…one inspiring lady.

Another fun interview with a lady names Phyllis. Phyllis is another Sweat Pink Ambassador. Look to her for some inspiration. She will help you remind yourself that YOU can control your wellness and you can do anything if you put your mind to it.

What’s your primary workout? My primary workout is running.  I have completed several 5K’s one 10K and 2 half marathons.

How long have you been working out? I have been on this wellness journey since June 2011 with a full commitment.

How often do you work out? Everyday I do something for a fitter me!  I run every other day for sure. Long runs are on the week ends and by long runs I mean 6 plus miles.

What’s your favorite outfit to Sweat Pink in? I love to workout in running shorts and a tank top. That way I never get over heated. I love to race in my CRX compression leggings.  I call them my superhero outfit.  They make me feel like I can leap tall buildings in a single bound.

What’s your favorite healthy snack and meal? I love a green smoothie!  I have one everyday.  2 oranges squeezed with a scoop of raw warrior protein power and a health handful of kale.  Whip it up in the blender and yummy.  I am also a fan of hummus and pita chips.  I live on hummus.

If you could have one cheat day where nothing counted against you, what would you eat and do? If I could cheat and nothing counted against my body, I would eat an omelet. I really miss eggs.  I recently found out that I have an inflammatory reaction to eggs so I eliminated them from my diet since August.

What is your biggest motivation to staying fit? Wellness.  I was scared into getting well in March 2011 by a bout of optic neuritis.  I was over weight and had numbness in my hands and feet plus terrible migraines.  My doctors thought it was MS.  I knew I had to get my health in order.  One year later in March 2012 I was 50 pounds lighter, the numbness was almost gone and the vision was 100% better.  I am in control of my wellness once again.

Any advice for the beginners out there? You just have to start.  Make the commitment and do it. Its as easy as that.

What’s your favorite thing about blogging? My favorite thing about blogging is other bloggers.  They are great.  I never knew there were so many wonderful people out there with such good advice and information.

How do you hope to inspire people? I hope to inspire women over 50 that it is not to late to get fit and we are not too old to race.  You can literally turn back the clock and add years to you life by living a healthy lifestyle. Plus, its so much FUN!

Chatting with Carmel

31 Oct

Meet Carmel! She’s a runner and she is here to motivate and inspire! She is also a Sweat Pink Ambassador with Fit Approach. Let’s get to know this girl and show her some love!

Name: Carmel Nicolas
Age: 27
Location: Boulder, CO
Twitter: @LifeandVibesOf
Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/TheLifeAndVibesOf?fref=ts

What’s your primary workout?
I am primarily a runner so my workout includes a mix of distance runs with some interval training mixed in! I have also been doing some serious kettlebell training, which I love — and do twice a week!

How long have you been working out?
I have been a committed runner for the last 2 years and haven’t looked back since!

How often do you work out?
I run 3-4 days a week. Kettlebell workouts twice a week and yoga once a week.

What’s your favorite outfit to Sweat Pink in?
I love Dryfit shorts by Nike, a good sportsbra tank (I am a c cup so I need all the support I can get!), drywick socks (to avoid blisters while running) and comfy shoes with lots of support for my arches.

What’s your favorite healthy snack and meal?
I love a salad of mixed herbs and greens, topped with some baked salmon. yum!

If you could have one cheat day where nothing counted against you, what would you eat and do?
Oh dear. I would eat biscuits and gravy with bacon and sausage for breakfast. Then go lay on the beach for a few hours while reading a book, then I would walk around and take pictures of beautiful random things. I’d have a buffulo chicken sandwich with bacon for lunch and wash that down with a milkshake. Then I would start happy hour at 4pm and drink margaritas till midnight. Dinner would be a huge italian spread with lots of pasta and chicken parmagian! dessert would be a huge plate of tiramisu! yum yum yum!

What is your biggest motivation to staying fit?
Looking at old pictures of me when I didn’t care about eating healthy or being active. **shudder** Also, as I get older my metabolism slowly decreases, so i’m basically trying to stay fit as I age.

Any advice for the beginners out there? Just know that it will not be easy. Welcome the challenge and remember to keep going. Also, it helps to have a good friend (or in my case, a fiance) who will support and motivate you.

What’s your favorite thing about blogging?
I love sharing my thoughts, experiences, and pictures with people who are looking for motivation and inspiration. I want to reach out to women who think they can’t run log distances or work out with heavy weights and give them the confidence they need to go out there and make a lifestyle change!

How do you hope to inspire people?
Lots and lots of positivity paired with an honest outlook on fitness. No, I don’t run 10 miles everyday, nor do I expect you to. I hope to inspire by being a good rolemodel and showing people that you can be active and still have a social life and eat cake and drink beers — the important part is keeping a balance.

Weekly Recap!

Weekly recap!

If you missed it, Guidewell posted my story of how I lost over 80 pounds the right way. Check it out!

I also did a blog swap with a Sweat Pink Ambassador sister. You can read about her journey into running here and here’s a sneak peak of mine:

A book of excuses. Could you write one? Let’s narrow it down a little. A book of excuses to not workout and take care of yourself. I bet if we got a few of us together we could come up with a big one. Here are a few that have come across my mind…

Want to see more? Well, then you have to visit her page and read the rest!

Week one is almost finished for my Early Bird Challenge. What is this? You ask. This challenge was created for people who have trouble or want to start waking up early and fitting their workout in before anything else. We are doing very well. I’ve been up at 5 every morning this week. The accountability is working! Take a look at my workout log. It’s not too late to join. Just contact me on Facebook.

Wondering what to make for supper? Check this out. It was very yummy! Time to chat! What was the highlight of your week? Are you dressing up for Halloween this weekend?

Just run.

9 Oct

Have you ever thought about running? Are you a runner? Were you a runner? Do you want to run? Then read this.

In February of this year I decided to sign up for a half-marathon. If you are a regular reader of mine, you already know this and I might sound like a broken record, but hold on and bear with me. Ok?

I went for my first run AFTER I signed up. It took alot for me to step outside and do this. I live in a very small town and everyone knows everyone (and if they don’t, they just make things up). Small town humor…anyways! I thought everyone is going to be wondering, “What the heck is she doing? Why is she running? Is she in trouble? Is something chasing her?”  I was nervous about looking stupid. My self-conscious almost got the best of me, but I laced up my shoes and went out and never looked back, except to watch for cars, and straighten out that occasional wedgie. Too much information? Hey, it happens! Alot!

Coming back from your very first run is one of the best feelings in the world. From then on, after every run, you will have that same feeling. I guarantee it. It is hard to describe. If you are/were a runner, you know exactly what I’m talking about.

You don’t need a bunch of gadgets and supplies to run. All you need is a good pair of running shoes. That’s it. We were made to run. Think about how much running you did as a kid without even thinking about it. You don’t have to be a fast runner. I’m not. I don’t give a hoot. I just like to run. That’s it. It clears my mind. Not that there’s alot to clear…

So, are you already thinking about going for your first run or thinking about getting back into it? Here is what I take on my runs:

  • My phone. I use it for two things: I like to listen to books and I use the Nike Running app.

  • Arm band-to hold my phone.
  • Nathan Quickdraw Handheld Bottle carrier-for long runs.nathan
  • PRO Compression socks.

Want a pair of these? Go to Pro Compression and use coupon code SOM102 for 40% off all Pink socks, including Marathon and Trainer Low styles. PLUS, for each purchase completed using this code, they will donate $1 to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation. Sounds like a done deal right? Now go shopping!

  • Running gloves (when it’s cold). These were a gift from my husband. I luff him.

glovesI do have a thumb. It must be camera shy.

So, are you ready to start running? You can do it! If I can do it, you can do it. And you will love it. Give it time and do it right. Here is a perfect schedule for a beginner. Follow it faithfully and you will be just fine. Trust me. Once you fall in love you will officially be in the club. Just go ahead and take the first step.

Happy March 5th!

5 Mar

Finally! What a beautiful day! The weather has not been favorable this past week and a half. So, that means we have had to put a hold on our training. Bummer! We were going to go early yesterday morning, but the roads were just dusted with some fresh, powdery snow. So, I went and found my pillow and blanket. I believe my partner-in-crime went and did her Insanity workout. She rocks.
I do not know how warm it got today, but I do know that it was warm enough to open up all of the windows in the house. I even cleaned my oven. Well, I hit the button…
When my husband came home from work, I was dressed and ready and out the front door. There she was, waiting for me with her cute little “finish line” print bandana. She loves bandanas!
Todays interval training was: run for 2 minutes and walk 2 minutes 5 times. It was so nice for my lungs to breathe in the warm air. The sun was shining bright. It was starting to set and was in our eyes right away, but I certainly am not complaining. It felt so good to get out there. I could tell that I had a week and a half of no running because I was getting tuckered out. When I feel tired I always think how blessed I am, how far I have come, and how grateful I am to my husband for being so supportive. He has been nothing but.
I am also grateful for my very motivational friend. She is my cheerleader! She holds the stopwatch and she is always cheering us on. If you listen carefully, you just may be able to
hear her. She is just the best.
