Phyllis…one inspiring lady.

19 Nov

Another fun interview with a lady names Phyllis. Phyllis is another Sweat Pink Ambassador. Look to her for some inspiration. She will help you remind yourself that YOU can control your wellness and you can do anything if you put your mind to it.

Name: Phyllis Strand
Blog address: www.galfriday4hire.com
Facebook: www.facebook.com/pastrand107

What’s your primary workout? My primary workout is running.  I have completed several 5K’s one 10K and 2 half marathons.

How long have you been working out? I have been on this wellness journey since June 2011 with a full commitment.

How often do you work out? Everyday I do something for a fitter me!  I run every other day for sure. Long runs are on the week ends and by long runs I mean 6 plus miles.

What’s your favorite outfit to Sweat Pink in? I love to workout in running shorts and a tank top. That way I never get over heated. I love to race in my CRX compression leggings.  I call them my superhero outfit.  They make me feel like I can leap tall buildings in a single bound.

What’s your favorite healthy snack and meal? I love a green smoothie!  I have one everyday.  2 oranges squeezed with a scoop of raw warrior protein power and a health handful of kale.  Whip it up in the blender and yummy.  I am also a fan of hummus and pita chips.  I live on hummus.

If you could have one cheat day where nothing counted against you, what would you eat and do? If I could cheat and nothing counted against my body, I would eat an omelet. I really miss eggs.  I recently found out that I have an inflammatory reaction to eggs so I eliminated them from my diet since August.

What is your biggest motivation to staying fit? Wellness.  I was scared into getting well in March 2011 by a bout of optic neuritis.  I was over weight and had numbness in my hands and feet plus terrible migraines.  My doctors thought it was MS.  I knew I had to get my health in order.  One year later in March 2012 I was 50 pounds lighter, the numbness was almost gone and the vision was 100% better.  I am in control of my wellness once again.

Any advice for the beginners out there? You just have to start.  Make the commitment and do it. Its as easy as that.

What’s your favorite thing about blogging? My favorite thing about blogging is other bloggers.  They are great.  I never knew there were so many wonderful people out there with such good advice and information.

How do you hope to inspire people? I hope to inspire women over 50 that it is not to late to get fit and we are not too old to race.  You can literally turn back the clock and add years to you life by living a healthy lifestyle. Plus, its so much FUN!

Run with Mindy!

5 Nov

Let me introduce you to Mindy. She’s runner with alot of races under her belt. Have you ever considered running? Read this. She’ll make up your mind for you. So, get ready to run!

Name: Mindy Bobe

Twitter: https://twitter.com/mindybobe

What’s your primary workout?

I love to run! I have run several 5K’s and 10K’s, 11 half marathons, and 1 full marathon. I am currently training for my second full marathon. My favorite race distance is a half marathon.

How long have you been running?

I’ve been running for almost 3 years! I fell in love with running while completing the couch to 5K program.

How often do you run?

I run 3-4 times a week. I run at least one long run and the rest are usually around 3-4 miles.

What’s your favorite outfit to Sweat Pink in?

I always run in a skirt because I like to look cute when I am running (as cute as you can look while running lol)!

What’s your favorite healthy snack and meal?

I love Chobani yogurt and sushi! But not together lol!

If you could have one cheat day where nothing counted against you, what would you eat and do?

I would eat pizza and watch movies on the couch all day! 😉

What is your biggest motivation to staying fit?

My biggest motivation is my boys. I want to be a healthy role model for them and show them that being healthy is important as well as fun!

Any advice for the beginners out there?

I always advise beginner runners to take it slow. That’s the biggest mistake beginner runners make…running too fast.

What’s your favorite thing about blogging?

I love the accountability and the community! When I blog about something I feel like my readers hold me accountable and so I must do what I wrote I was going to do. I also love all the new online friends I have made through blogging!

How do you hope to inspire people?

I hope to inspire people by showing them that if I can do it they can too! I believe anyone can run…you may not like it but you CAN do it. You can do anything you set your mind to do!

I did it!

16 Sep

Yesterday I ran a half-marathon. This was a huge deal for me. I signed up for the Bismarck Marathon before I went out for my very first run. I knew I could do it with the right training and hard work. And now I can talk about it…finally!

I took Friday off from work because I knew it was going to be a crazy day of packing and trying to remember everything. We decided it would be best for our little family if we got a hotel room the night before the race. So, not only did I have to pack for the race and myself, but I had to try and remember everything for Maddox. You got to be prepared when you have kids and you’re going out of town! It basically looked like we were going away for the month when we headed out the door! I’m glad they came with me. I know I wouldn’t have slept that night if I had to be there by myself. I need my boys.

I picked up my racing bag at the mall. It had a nice long sleeve Krohl’s Diner Bismarck Marathon shirt in it and some coupons. Not a whole lot. I did buy another shirt and jacket there. They were super cheap, so why not!?

After that we ran to Scheels to get Maddox some shoes and I purchased a new top for the race. I figured it was going to be quite chilly so I got a long sleeved shirt.

It was finally time to eat! We went to the Olive Garden. I noticed alot of runners made the same choice! We always order Bruschetta  for an appetizer. Scarfed that down along with my salad and bread. Main course was angel hair pasta with a tomato sauce. Nothing fancy. It’s what I usually order in some way or another.

After we ate we went back to the hotel and went swimming for a bit. It was Maddox’s first time swimming! Do you think Daddy remembered to take pictures? Probably not…

Let’s skip to the next morning because I’m starting to fall asleep. I woke up at 5:30 and got ready. I was planning on getting down there by 6:15. I grabbed a banana and ate it. I barely had my eyes open yet. I didn’t have to put my contacts in because me, being the bonehead that I am, forgot my contact solution! It was nice trying to peel my eyes open. By the way, I still have no idea where my contact solution is. WTH? I put my makeup on, threw my hair in a pony, got dressed, and then Tyrell took a picture of me. Don’t I look just overjoyed and thrilled?

I walked out the door and I was on my way! When I got there it was dark out and cold! I sat in the car for a while and then walked to the potties. I kept thinking about my grandpa telling me that kids fall in there all the time and they can’t get out. He told me this when I was little and I don’t think I’ve used one since! What a nice grandpa huh? He was, just liked to give you a bad time. ANYWAYS, so I quick went in and out and I ran back to my car to warm up. We had to line up at 7:10. The sun was rising and so was the temperature. It felt just right for an early morning run. During the National Anthem I realized I was standing in the complete wrong area and I had to bud in to a billion runners. I’m such an idiot. So, I finally got to where I wanted to be. In the back! It was chip timed, so it didn’t matter where I was.

I kept a steady pace throughout the entire run. The hill was a beotch. I’m just glad I never stopped to walk once. I am not a fast runner, but I give it my all, and I finished. The volunteers were great and the cheering sections were awesome.

I finished the race at 2:26:28. Seventeen minutes from what I thought. I honestly thought I was going to have to walk at some point, so I allowed myself that time. Got to start somewhere right?

It was a great run. The weather could not have been more perfect. I listed to my book and I have no idea what went on. So, I will have to go back and listen. I was concentrating so much on my pace and my surroundings.

Just before the finish line I saw my mom holding Maddox. I was so happy to see them! I crossed that sucker, received my medal, and I went over to the tent to get a beverage. I was handed a water and some chocolate milk and a grocery bag with a banana, rice krispie treat, and some pretzels. I chugged the water and milk and walked to meet my family. My mom gave me a hug and my dad made some smart ass comment about having to walk so far to get to the car. Got to love that guy. On the way back to the hotel I drank a Strawberry Vegan Shakeology.

No time to rest! I had to quick shower and pack so we could all go eat. My stomach was starting to really bother me. I almost felt like I was having a contraction. I ignored and we went to eat…more pasta. My stomach was killing me. I wasn’t hungry, but I knew I had to eat something. After we were done eating we headed to Menards to get fun things like stain and a wheelbarrow. A light bulb went off in my head and I mentally slapped myself. You idiot! You drank milk! I’ve had a sneaky suspicion for a while now that my body has a hard time digesting dairy. I can’t even tell you the last time I ever drank a glass of milk. Atleast I knew what the problem was. A very painful problem. I would have lied down in the aisles of Menards if I could get down there myself. I supposed I could have asked someone to push me. We headed home shortly after that. I talked to a pharmacist and she said I just had to wait it out.

I felt alot better that night so after church Tyrell and I went to a movie and then out for a glass of wine afterwards. We came home, ate a late supper, and I think we were both asleep before 11. Pure exhaustion.

Today I sort of feel like I have a bad hangover. I’m tired and groggy. And I feel like this blog may not make alot of sense. I sort of feel like I’ve been drinking and typing. Uh oh! Hopefully tomorrow I will feel as good as new. It was a great weekend. A weekend I’ve been looking forward to for a long time! I did it!
